In the late 1990s, a dedicated group of Central Indiana real estate professionals recognized the need for broader representation and access within the Realtist movement. At the time, there was an existing local Realtist-affiliated group in Indianapolis; however, membership opportunities were limited, making it difficult for many interested professionals to become involved. As a result, access to NAREB membership, leadership opportunities, and the benefits of the national organization was restricted for many aspiring Realtists in the region.
Determined to create a more inclusive path forward, future CIRA founders including Bonita Hurt, Myra Lillard, Jackie Simpson, Janice Bradley, Erica Petty Saunders, Diana Rice Wilkerson, Delores Kennedy, Michelle Latney, Kim Rossbrown-Battles and Joyce Black sought to establish stronger roots for the Realtist movement in Central Indiana. They submitted membership applications, paid fees, attended national meetings, and actively pursued opportunities to connect with NAREB. Despite their efforts, progress was delayed and applications were returned without achieving the level of participation and representation they sought.
Undeterred by these challenges, the group continued to build relationships and advocate for a stronger Realtist presence in Central Indiana. With encouragement and support from leaders across the country, particularly Ohio Realtists Russell Neal and Roland Somerville, as well as regional leadership, they remained committed to their vision. Through years of perseverance, collaboration, and determination, the founders laid the groundwork for an organization that would be open, welcoming, and focused on advancing homeownership, professional development, and community impact.
Their efforts culminated in 2012 with the official founding of the Central Indiana Realtist Association (CIRA). What began as a vision shared by a small group of determined professionals became a recognized organization dedicated to the principles of "Democracy in Housing" and committed to creating opportunities for real estate professionals and the communities they serve.
Since its founding, CIRA has grown into a respected voice for fair housing, sustainable homeownership, and professional excellence throughout Central Indiana. Through homebuyer education programs, scholarships, community outreach initiatives, and signature events such as the Trailblazer Luncheon, CIRA continues to honor the vision and sacrifice of its founders while developing the next generation of Realtist leaders.
Today, CIRA stands as a testament to the perseverance, courage, and commitment of its founding members. Their determination to create access where barriers existed and to build a lasting Realtist presence in Central Indiana continues to inspire the organization's mission of advocacy, education, leadership, and community empowerment.
